1.0 What is the Nostromo n52?

The Nostromo n52 Gaming Pad by Belkin is simply an ergonomic keypad with directional controller under the thumb and a few extra buttons.

It gives you access to

  • 14 Keys
  • 1 Thumb Shift
  • 1 Orange Trigger (my stealth button)
  • Directional Controller
  • Scroll Wheel

2.0 Why do I need the Nostromo n52?

The layout of the Nostromo is only part of its advantage. Besides taking all the keys that would usually require 2 hands or one hand sliding back and forth across the keyboard and organizing them into an area you can get to quickly with out moving your wrist at all. It can also Quadruple the amount of keys you have access to under that one hand. Combined with the profile and loadout manager software you can make your Nostromo pad do pretty incredible things.

3.0 How do I use the Nostromo n52?

The profile software lets you Map standard keys to each of the buttons on the Nostromo Pad or Create Macros that can consist of many keys including delays between key presses. This can effectively allow you to use one button to cast a buff to everyone in your party or do a series of actions waiting the appropriate cool down before performing the next action.

The Nostromo Profile editor also lets you set keys that SHIFT the state of the keypad. I have my thumb key set to shift to the blue state that you can see in the second image. This second state allows me to assign a whole new set of keys to all the buttons on the pad. I can set the BLUE SHIFT to either Toggle or Momentary. Toggle means you hit the blue shift and it stays on til you hit it again. Momentary means its only on while the key is down. I use momentary for my rogue. However a druid might use the Toggle and also Cycle between the 4 different states Normal, Red, Green, Blue. This would allow them to have different macros, key bindings and setups for each of their different forms. But those are just a couple of ways to set it up.

You can even configure to use some of the keys at the top for movement ala WASD style instead of the directional controller. The directional controller could effectively bind to 8 different keys.

To use the controller in game simply create a profile and then load the profile in the Loadout Manager and tell it to use that profile when WoW.exe is run. Its as simple as that.

4.0 - Its Awkward how can you use this thing?

I think everyone goes through an adjustment phase where you simply get slaughtered in PVP trying to learn how to use it. Every single one of my friends who has bought it was like it is kinda awkward. All I say to them is give it ONE WEEK. Not a couple of days… not a couple of hours or even 6 days. Give it 7 Days of playtime. If you force yourself to use it for 7 days then you can take it back to the store and get your money back. However I have yet to have a friend return one.

I admit I almost returned mine when I bought it. I gave it a week or so figuring I had 30 days to return it if I really hated it. Now I cant imagine playing without it. I am not exaggerating a quick talk with anyone that has used the n52 for any amount of time will reveal the same thing its just impossible to play wow with out it. That is probably it’s only down side… However if I go to a Lan Party and don’t take my computer I make sure to take the n52… It’s a USB connection so I can connect it to anything and the profiles, profile editor software and Loadout Manager software installs all fit on my USB keychain (easily they hardly take up any room)

5.0 - Where do I get a Nostrom n52?

I got my n52 from CompUSA. I am sure you can pick one up at most computer stores and maybe even a few online retailers. I suggest

Getting it locally if possible because it is possible to have problems with the keys and its easier to swap it out at the local CompUSA then

RMA / Ship it back.

6.0 - Can I see your Rogue’s n52 Profile?

Yes – You can download it Here! It is an older profile but it will illustrate how to set it up correctly.
