Going back to my roots!
Well I started out as an avid Everquest player for 2 solid years+ with over 170 days played. I stopped playing EQ and quickly gave up the idea of playing EQ2 for WoW. World of Warcraft is an amazing game and im happy I played it. But it has one fundamental flaw that will cause it to have an amazing turnover rate as well. ITS TOO EASY! Thats right the game is too simple. Not enough customization, even with talent trees theres not enough different paths to take. Theres not enough in the Details etc.... 1 month ago I would have passionately defended WoW as the king of MMO's but I find that each day that notion slips a little bit farther.
How did all this happen? Im ussually very loyal to the game I start playing. However school and other commitments pulled me away from the game after I leveled up my second rogue to 60... Battlegrounds got be back in the mix for a couple of weeks but then I a friend at work mentioned they were trying the EQ2 trial of the Isle demo... I laughed... seriously you must be joking was my reply. But no he said why not its free and he mentioned that it might actually take advantage of the two GEFORCE 6800 GT's sitting in my box... hmmm ok ill try it out.
So I loaded it up and started playing and things just started to catch my attention. Listening to the folks that left EQ2 for WoW they made it seem like EQ2 was some broken shell of a game... however I found the opposite its incredibly polished. (At least the demo was right? ) The voice acting really pulls you into the game and makes it nice and easy on your eyes since you dont have to read EVERYTHING. Not exactly the clincher but I thought it was nice anyway. All of the windows of the interface are much more detailed. Take for example the guild window. EQ2 has sooo much more detail keeping logs of what other guild members accomplish etc...
This is how I started to notice that everything in WoW is sooo simplified like it was designed for a younger crowd in mind. Which is when i realized it was designed for a younger crowd. How many 13 year olds had I run into on teamspeak in WoW. The maturity level of the EQ2 crowd is refreshing to say the least. Maybe I am just sheilded but it is a HUGE difference from what I can tell. Add on to that a better Quest Log and an awesome housing system you quickly start to undestand that WoW has some serious catching up to do.
Many people might argue that EQ2 ripped off alot of the stuff from WoW but thats how the Genre works... EQ was definitly not the first of its kind... just significantly better... and so was WoW... but now EQ2 is catching up and in many places surpassing that of WoW. We can only benefit if Blizzard and Sony duke it out right?
So thats now I have come full circle back to Everquest... Back to the game that got me hooked on MMO's. However this time EQ is not the king and I may sway back and forth depending on which game is more fun for me to play. However my definition of fun is not the same as everyone elses. Some people thing quick groups, lots of solo content etc... is fun. I think impossible odds, high social interaction, long camps, rare spawns and even rarer drops are what makes an MMO fun for me. I want to earn an Eye Patch of Plunder and I dont want anyone that goes to thottbot.com to be able to get it... I want it to be a status symbol of how addicting this game is for me and how much more I am willing to put into this game then anyone else.
