[A View from Behind] PVPnmypants
PvP. Player versus Player. No timed action patterns, no artificial intelligence (sometimes none at all). Just you sitting at your desk and someone else sitting at theirs. Each of you trying to reduce the others health points to zero. And I stink at it. Well, specifically, Arena. I've tried and I just can't get the hang of it. A big part of it is that all of my talents and gear itemizations are purposed for raiding and dungeon content. I know stamina and reslience are the most important stats to have for being successful with Arena play. But I've never done any serious PvPing. Sure, when the honor system was revamped towards the end of 2006, I was right in there with all of the other BG noobs farming for perplz.
I can take any of the popularly accepted Rogue builds and make them work well for PvE content (yes, I was 20/0/41 lewlstep for my virgin Kara run, and I managed to keep myself in the top 3 dps). But ask me to put together a solid PvP build with talents focused for Arenas, and I'm lost. Does the old school 31/0/30 Cold Blood Prep build work? How about 41/0/20 Mutilate Assassination? I know Combat Maces is one of the more popular newcomers, but what talents in the combat tree are good for Arenas? What about the stunlocking Hemo builds from the past?
Not that I plan on respeccing for PvP anytime soon, I am just curious. I want to know what other people have had success with. I try looking and reading through the forums, but all I get turned away pretty fast by all the trolls and flamers.
So, any advice from anyone out there?

I am a combat sword spec for arena which works fine. Combat maces or fists is fine too. If you prefer a dagger I hear the 41/20/0 combat mutilate is a great pvp and pve spec.
The best advice for Arena is to practice 1v1 fights against as many classes as you can. If you don't like dueling, go into EotS or AB and look for 1v1 situations. AV is a lowsey place to practice Arena pvp.
Well, I use Premed/Cold Blood.
Good burst damage, but the all-around DPS after the big burst is a little lacking. If you can get the hang of it, you might like it.
Alright. First off: 30/0/31 (SF/Premed). It works extremely well for 2v2, and a miracle in duels; It sucks for absolutely every other thing. At this point, I have done absolutely no 5v5, but I have heard (and seen) that Mutilate is awesome for 3s and 5s.
In order to beat some classes, it takes gear. With the best gear coming from arenas, grabbing a 2v2 is the best way to get gear, if you hate other arenas. However, with you not wanting to kill your rating in arenas, the best way to practice for arenas is to duel people, the more classes and people the better. I have heard of some people recording their duels and looking over them again to see what they did wrong. If you have the program and the time to do this, then go for it.
Awesome job keeping yourself in the top 3 dps, by the way!
The bottom line is that PvP takes skill and luck. Without gear, it becomes impossible to beat most classes, and even with the best gear things can go wrong. If you still can't get the hang of PvP, don't worry. Practice makes perfect.
For arena most rogues are going with a 41/20/0 mutilate build and something like a 19/42 combat build.
it all depends on the bracket you are playing in i guess, if you are playing in a low bracket 2v2 3v3,some people have had success with 30 0 31 because it can take down people very quickly but when your backstabs/ambush doesnt crit things sometimes get messy if a step in "burst" step out doesnt go to plan.
But in 5v5 most rogues atm tend to be swinging towards the combat maces combat mutilate etc.
21 0 40 cold blood/hemo is a good spec very similar in nature with prep dagger except prep (insert mace, sword, fist here) more reliable sustained dps with hemo (not relying on backstab crits)and still decent bursts with cb eviscerate although less cp generation due to lack of seal fate.
just my two cents
I'd start with Osiris's guide. It has a couple good builds. It's really helped me out a great deal.

I'm specc'd for PVE right now (Combat Swords), but I plan to go back to a Mutilate build once I get bored and want to PVP. Combat Swords is great for leveling, but it isn't as fun to play as my Assasination build IMHO.
