Mix and Match: An Emerging Set Trend

I've been watching set bonuses since the first ones appeared. Ive been hopeful myself for the return of the 120 Energy build. It has in the form of Merciless Gladiator. Now If I could just get better in the Arena.... thats right don't look. After one week in the Arena my rating in 2v2 has bounced as low as 1300 and back up to around 1420 or so. Granted this was my first week at 70 and both myself and the Warlock's first week in arena. But enough excuses... much much more work needs to be placed in that aspect to improve ourselves and it will come. I guess we wont be besting those teams decked out in full season 1 and season 2 gear already.

As I struggle to acclimate myself to the Arena match play I have noticed an increasing trend in set bonuses. From what I can tell I think I am going to like it... but I will hold judgment for a bit longer. What I have noticed is that with the increased number of sets a player can obtain the amount of armor needed to achieve the different set bonuses has been lowered. While at first glance this just seems a push into the casual direction I think its a bit more thought out then that.

The sets seem to have bonuses that compliment each other or stack with each other. The easiest to notice is the new Arena set. Merciless Gladiator's 2 piece bonus is the same as Gladiator's 2 piece bonus. +35 Resilience. I think you will see a lot of people stacking 2 set pieces not because they cant get all four season 2 but because the bonus of 70 resilience is more enticing then having the 4 piece bonus of either set.

One of the other sets that caught my eye for Rogues is Netherblade and Slayer sets. Netherblade 2pc increases the duration of your Slice and Dice ability and Slayer 2pc increases the haste of your slice and dice ability. Both of these effects compliment each other well. Like a well matched Bikini sometimes the effect is better then the original... (its summer here in Florida thats the best frame of reference for me at the moment)

Now I maybe off my rocker but I sincerely hope that this trend is a well thought out plan by Blizzard to encourage the mix and match of sets to produce powerful set bonus combinations, not the product of a Ritalin induced writing frenzy.

I wont yet comment on the arena set mix/matching since I'm hardly an authority on the subject. I arena to get the weapons and to clown around, I'm certainly not a ringer.

The PvE set bonuses are equal parts delightful and frustrating. Starting with Netherblade, the 2/5 bonus is simply glorious for the sword/fist/mace rogues. The emergence of the 1/5 rotation has been the biggest throw-back to rogues in TBC given the undue amount of aggression we suffer in boss fights. The inability to maintain smooth cycles hits us particularly hard and this is now significantly mitigated. The 4/5 bonus, however, is quite uncompelling. Unless the individual strength of the pieces outperform other items on a stand-alone basis, I wont concern myself with getting the 4/5 bonus. As it stands, the only reason I'm going to collect 5/5 is to ensure the longevity of my 2/5 bonus. Well, that and to look cool in IF.

Deathmantle's 2/5 is practically worthless. It will be nice on fights like Hydross and VR where you don't get to rupture, but I just don't see it as a reason to be excited. The 4/5 bonus looks like it could be truly awesome, though, since it will make finisher a net gain in energy. It favors sword/fist/mace rogues again, though. I'm not sure of the % chance for the 4/5 bonus to proc, but it would have to be pretty high to justify sacrificing 2/5 NB.

The Slayer set looks like it will stand on its own. Yes, the 2/5 NB and the 2/5 Sl look like a match made in heaven... only not. 2/5 NB already allows for 1/5 cut cycles and wasted energy and cps. Now having SnD give 35% multiplier will simply result in more compot procs and more wasted cps and energy. I doubt it would be enough to squeeze in a 1s/5r/2e or 1s/5r/3e cycle, so you're now just wasting even more energy and cps with no real benefit. You still have 100% SnD uptime and it still benefits from the 2/5 Sl bonus.

So, basically I say you preserve the 2/5 NB for as long as you can by making sure you pick the 2 pieces that show the least "shortfall" to the other slot equivalents you come across. Then, once you get your dirty mitts on 4/5 DM or 2/5 Sl, it's time to put NB away for good.
