Admiration Among Thieves?

Whether it's the generic DnD thief, Robin Hood, Mercury (Hermes), Ali Baba, Winona Ryder, Oliver Twist (and Fagin and the Artful Dodger), or Claude Speed (GTA), if you've ever played a rogue or a thief, you've probably had at least a fleeting thought about some famous rogue or thief made famous by literature, movies, the media, or games.

If you haven't, perhaps you should!

Take a moment to think about some of the many myriad thieves, swashbuckler types, and rogueish types out there, and pick a few that perhaps have influenced you, or that you particularly like.

For instance, who could dislike the Dread Pirate Roberts, the debonair swashbuckler from one of the most famous cult movies of all time?

Or, perhaps you like the cat burglar type, which have been played by the likes of Sean Connery (Entrapment), and Pierce Brosnan (The Thomas Crown Affair).

Or maybe you like the idea of a bit more ruggish, brutal thievery as depicted in the Grand Theft Auto games. (Yeah, it's still thievery!)

Or you could examine our real history with the likes of Henry Moore Smith (a lying escape-artist horse thief in the 1800s), or Ishikawa Goemon (a legendary bandit hero who, like his fictional counterpart Robin Hood, stole from the rich and gave to the poor).

We, who play the rogue, somewhere in our hearts, minds, and souls, are influenced by the sly, the stealthy, the quick, the deadly, and we admire those who represent such characteristics. Let us, then, recognize and acknowledge some of these rogues.

Whom do you admire?

[for bonus CoolRogue points, can you name all of the rogue-like representations on the photo montage above?]

Hmm, my decision to play my rogue and spec him the way he is now is influenced mainly by agent #47 of the Hitman series.

He is the assassin who exhibits the qualities of resourcefulness, ruthlessness, brutality and efficiency. The only close-to-accurate representation of #47 in WoW are those rogues who spec 30/0/31 who also took engineering, I think.

Good catch on Ice Pirates!

Zorro is a good one I hadn't thought of.

Hitman. Good example of the sly, but powerful assassin.

I love those really bad ninja movies from the 80's. They where so bad, but I always rememberd a few scenes wich where really great apart from the poor acting skills.

I used to read a book series many years ago called Thieves World about a town called Sanctuary. There was a Rogue called Shadowspawn who was the bastard son of a prostitute and the god of thieves. What I liked about him he wasn't just some wimpy thief. He wore multiple daggers, throwing knives/stars and carried a sword.

You should really include Han Solo in the montage.

Like. Seriously.

Okay, let's see who is in the montage... (that, yes, I made myself)...

We have:

-The NWN thief (left side, duo-tone, jumping with daggers)

-Garrett from the game, Thief (from looking glass studios) (below on left)

-Dread Pirate Roberts (played by Cary Elwes) in Princess Bride (lower right)

-Nick Atwater (played by Andre Braugher) from the Thief television series (middle right)

-Oliver Twist (the kid running on the sun/moon in the background)

-Jason (Robert Ulrich) and Roscoe (Michael D. Roberts) from the movie The Ice Pirates (right in the middle)

How'd you do?

My idea of a rogue/assassin is one who takes his or her time waiting for the right moment. Orchstrating things and people so that they suit his or her needs. (in my mind this excludes the swashbuckler who is a witty blade swirling semi-warrior).

Jarlaxle Baenre from R.A. Salvatore books.

Resourcefulness is his middle name, manipulation his first name. There is never a situation that Jaraxle doesnt twist around so he benefits from it. The witty resourceful rogue who pull strings from the shadows making people do what he wants.

The Saint - who is better at disguises and vanishing into thin air? :D

Artemis Entreri is deffinently high on my list of Assassin inspiration. Cutting out the madrass of your targets bed and hiding inside it........... Epitome of fighting prowess too.

Ethan Hawke i suppose is a rogue too, quick thinking and gutsy with heavy arsenal of gadgets ofc.

Han solo is a must on my list, the rogue oppertunist if ever there was one, but still retains some moral compass. Not the brightest bulb in the cabinet tho... *remembering the chase scene on the deathstar*.

Not quite sure if this one really counts as a rogue.... Mad Martigan from willow. The Charletan :D

a Rogue Master could be the old retirering royal assassin in the robin hobb books, "Farseers triology". Working the strings from inside the shadows, keep on top of all rumors and even starting his own false ones to control the situations and in times of his kings needs... eventually an assassin that distributes the kings justice silently. Master of poisons , disguises and intrigue.

Rogue abilities and such definitely remind me of ninjutsu. Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhhkgMu7adk

I think the coolest rogue is either Artemis Entreri (from the DnD series with Drizzt). Sword/Dagger ftw!
