To gank or not to gank?
First off, allow me to introduce myself... Along Silyth, I am fresh blood on the Roguespot team. I won't dwell on details about myself, but I am a Pvp enthusiest primarily, but I have been known to head into an instance. I prefer small group content to uber raiding, but to each his own I suppose.
That said... I was reading some posts in the WoW forums that spurred some thoughts. When you are riding through a zone, and you see a grey member of the opposite faction, do you bother to dismount and serve them a healthy serving of death? For some, the answer is always the same. Answer 1. Yes. I kill all (insert alliance or horde as appropriate), regardless of level or class. Answer 2. No. I don't kill greys, because it's not my style. (something to that effect)
For me, it has never been that simple. At one point I took the high road, and would not kill a grey at all. That opinion has slowly changed as I have been leveling an alt. I never noticed how many times I avoided getting ganked simply by stealthing between kills. I don't have that option on my warlock alt (gasp, a caster), so I find myself on the receiving end of alot of alliance skulls. Its almost comic to see a skull that I recognize as a low 50's from AV, and see them proceed to destroy my lowbie world. These new experiences have led to a changing of attitudes.
That brings me back to the topic question; To gank or not to gank? Why bother? Why not?
I guess, in the end it's a matter of style, taste and preference. Do you want to be known on your server and a merciless killer, who /spits in the face of all who oppose you? Do you want to be known as an honorable foe who /salutes the fallen with respectful dignity? There are many shades of grey on this topic, and there is no right way to go.
For me, I choose the middle ground and both. I will kill with impunity if my mood is black, or I will dance with a lowbie and ride away with a /train. Like it or not, your actions define the opinions of your foes and friends alike. If none of that mattered to us, why play an online game?
Cheers,

Osiris' Rogue Guide v3(New)
Stealth FAQ (EU)
Grinding Guide 1.0

Good question.
Just 3 months ago I found myself to be leveling an undead priest. I didn't have any problems with my character being ganked until late 40's, but even if I did, it was non-irritating. Back then I never went "as low" (in my opinion), as ganking a grey alliance. Of course there were exceptions - a suicidal grey, or a grey attacking my friends.
Right now I am leveling an undead rogue on a new server... and it's a pain in the ### when some skull comes over just to say 'hi' with his sword/mace/spells/whatever. Dunno if it's just me, or what, but untill now every 1 in 2 sulls I saw came and ganked me (the other half didn't see me in stealth)... and I start to seriously think about going over to Loch Modan for some low-level carnage.
I can clearly see a pattern here - if one doesn't get ganked, he doesn't (generally) gank. But as one gets frustrated with how he's treated by higher-levels, he lets out his frustration on others.
I think you should ask:
What triggered such action-reaction behaviour? (it had to start somewhere)
Where is this whole thing heading? People won't level countless alts, there won't be many new players soon... What then?
Just my few thoughts.
And then there are times that just beg for a kill. A couple of weeks ago, I rode up on a 53 mage and two 60 priests in WPL working a mob. All flagged. I was not (Terenas is PvE and I don't get as much time on as I'd like.) The mage sat down to mana and the priests left. So, good rogue that I am, I dismounted. Mage sat there. I stealthed. No action. So I killed him.
Binjali (then 58)
Terenas
How can you spell the title of the blog wrong? That's just unthinkable.
to ganked or not to ganked? my answer: to ganked!! As I level my alt I was continually ganked by horde and not only ganked but camp. My way to honor the grey that i ganked now and not to be honorless like the horde is that I kill and I move on...not like the horde 6 sixties killing and camping a gray. enough said. anonymus because i am not register.
im a sadist.
simply put, ill gank him till he hearths, quits, calls his 60 friends, or better yet - bring his 60 alt (if he has any)
but by that time he manages to do that, I'm long gone.
hillsbrad is my favorite zone anyways.
Like the first post says, if I am in a bad mood, I am on a blood rage. Or if I am calm and collected, I use my 'DetectJackAss' add-on. But if I must kill a lowbie who does not fall on either categories, it is probably because a fellow fraction is in trouble or I will be farming for something in their area (I hate being bothered by something while I am killing a mob).
I do however normally practice not attacking someone while they are attacking a mob (grey or not grey), I wait till they are done then strike.
Well,
As far as camping and ganking greys. I camp a grey in one case.
I have a group who is looking to PVP and the que's are way too long. Therefore we have to resort to world PVP. I have found that if you goto a low level area such as Hillsbrad and gank and camp greys then the honor kills will come when the grey go get thier mains or when they call in for help.
Behhh. I choose at the beginning to not be an ass for greys and even for greens or yellow that were fighting and/or at low health/mana. I also choose to not gank even if sometimes I hear people say "I gank cause people ganked me when I was in the lowbies" and I choose to stop the chain with me cause it's because of those people that people ganked. FOR VANGEANCE!!
But last week I changed my way... don't ask me why but now I kill people when they are fighting, maybe because I saw that at lvl 60, the greens will soon be 60s too and they will have the chance to kill me while I'm low on hp.
I don't kill greys though. I remember once with my priest alt, he was 40 or something like that and I attacked a 60 pally at the based of TB....naked and with my fist.... he killed me. I laught and thought : "Wow! This guy as like NO sense of humor." And from that day I choose to kill alliance cause they seem to not be able to laugh when you do such a joke.
personally, i dont gank greys unless they are messing with fellow hordies. or if they gank my alt and i jump on my main and give them a taste of the steel.
whats the point? it doesnt teach the opposing player anything but to return in kind. it doesnt give you gold, xp, or honor. it doesnt even give you any sort of challenge.
oh and they resurrect and will eventually get to 60 anyway.
If I'm not going to get any honor, why bother ganking them. If I'm busy doing something specific, (farming leather, doing a quest) I'm not going to go out of my way to gank unless they are slowing me down or they attack first.
That said, I have a mage alt...yeah yeah, bad choice I know... that would get ganked constantly when trying to level. I finally got to the point where before I would go questing with him I would put my rogue where he was going to be. Then when those pesky alliance would start camping him (even if they were around his level) here comes my rogue to waste them without even trying!
I think it's an integral part of the game. It's the only part which adds danger to an otherwise totally predictable world. I think it's a duty to gank people, I love to think how they must have just jumped out of their seat when suddenly they hear "crack"!
That said, I only gank when it fits the game. I don't "camp", that's a game mechanic, not a feature of a dangerous world you're trying to cross at your peril...
Point blank, there are certain areas of the map that are full of horde/alliance, all trying to complete quests. You know what I'm talking about... Booty Bay, Hillsbrad, etc.
It's like mixed gang territory and this is West Side Story.
"Get your Horde butt out of my turf."
I don't care what level they are or if they're doing a quest. If I have time on my hands to dismount and stealth them, I'm doing it. I hate Horde in my neighborhood.
Am I being mean?
Probably.
I like to gank. My reasions: I've been ganked many times so it feels good to get some revenge. Also I'm hoping to weaken the opposing side by slowing down their grinding time and frustrate them. I know how it feels.. Ever since I got spat on and laughed at by a undead... IT WAS GO TIME BABY!

just dont be an ass about it
/spit /laugh /bored
thats just not classy
kill them before they know what hit them and keep moving
I think that ganking is an essential part of a rogue's repertoire. That is why we were given the skills the we have, ie stealth, ambush, our stuns. We have the tools necessary to make the perfect ganker. I say why not, if you want you can justify to gank or not to gank wih some moral reasoning. I belive its more simple than that, its an inate instinct that drives us to kill what we see, and the easiest always fall first. Although for me the best way to gank is with a gnome, naked in STV!! nothiing demoralizes your opponent like getting killed by a naked gnome!
I used to hate ganking, and being ganked. I used to play a Dwarf hunter, and I lost count of the amount of times I got ganked. Then, one day, a horde rogue reared his malformed little head, and my world changed. He was relentless, he killed anyone and anything, he didnt care about grey, green whatever, if it was there, he tried to kill it.
He changed my view completly on ganking, and now, I have swirched server, and play rogue myself, a class I used to detest.
Now I see what all the fuss is about >8=).
Rogue is the best class I have played for pure fun, nothing else comes close, and I've tried them all.
And fir the question - "To gank or not to gank" - my answer is simple - GANK -
Thank you Panos of Twilight's Hammer (eu) for introducing me to the undead rogue.

I (50 rogue) will kill anything with a red name! It's not so much for revenge, although as a rogue in STV i was ganked pretty hardcore, many, many times. I guess it's kind of an RP thing (although I don't consider myself and RPer at all). This is WAR!!! and you can bet that if you were really a horde/alli you would brutally slaughter any man,woman,child... cow, etc of the opposing faction. Just my POV. IF IT'S NAME IS RED, MAKE IT DEAD!!! WOOT
P.S. /spit FTW
