"My god, nerf hunters or buff rogues!" - No. Not Going to Happen!
I stumbled across this jewel in the WoW Rogue Forums. Normally I am very supportive of Rogues in general. But not when they cry for buffs or nerfs while playing at 50% of their playing potential.
To Sum up the post hes sad that he got killed by a hunter 14 levels below him. Regaurdless of the fact... and he realizes this... that he forgot to do some key things that should have been no brainers.
I fight hunters everyday, I fight mages everyday and im happy to say that I come out on top more often then not. Rogues as a class have no room to gripe or scream for another class's nerfs. After almost every other class has been buffed (i think they just nerfed pallies) I can still defeat almost every matchup.
Talents play a huge part in how hard a class is to defeat. Hunters, Mages and Warriors specfically can make talent choices that make them extremely difficult.
Granted I have rediculous burst dps with 120 energy seal fate dagger build and a Perditions. But if I am careless all the gear in the world will not make up for lack of preparation.
Thats right preparation is not just a 21 point talent in our sub tree... it is the difference between winning and losing matchups. Im talking about anything. Duels / BG PvP / World PvP etc...
Heres a good excersize for this Rogue and others that share his mentality.
1) Observe your target
- Whats his pattern, whats he doing.
- Does he have friends close by.
2) Prepare for your fight
- Poison Up!
- Check key trinkets. (Barov Peasant Caller used after a mages Frost nova really pisses em off!)
3) Approach Target
- Wait for them to use a key cooldown.
- Fight them at a choke point in the landscape or where you can use the environment to your advantage. (Ive actually beaten hunters kiting me by forcing them to come around a corner to LoS me and blinding them)
4) Kill Target
- Keep your visibility up. If you stun spin your view and check for approaching enemies ... etc.
- Get away. Dont stick around making it easy for his friends to find you. They want retribution... dont allow it.
5) If you Lose
- Sit back and check your cooldowns what could you have done differently. If theres something you could have done better. Practice Practice. Dont go straight to the forums.

1) I got the jump, but even then I was out of stealth (engaged in combat).
2) No poisons on my weapon, I had failed to apply poisons, not needing them beforehand.
3) I had the dumb idea of trying to kill a hunter in the first place, regardless of level.

I love kiting hunters.
If they do get the jump on me, and they know what they are doing, I just can't catch them. There isn't much anybody can do.
However, if they get just a bit too much distance from me I just turn and run away from them. This makes them come back towards you. Get far enough away and mount up, then you can just run them down.
Good write-up. Don't fight a warrior or a hunter without dual crippling.

I dont know what I am doing and I know that! Hehe, slow em down and rip em up!!

Some people just suck. If you dont take the time to learn the basics, you deserve to get boofed by someone 14 levels below you. I seriously feel bad for hunters, they got hit hard in the last big patch. Like you said, More often that not, I come out on top.

I agree 110%
good post, 100% accurate
I dont totally agree.
hunters are a hard machup a lot of the time wheras apart from the occasional warlock or shammy who is a good player, i dont have much difficulty with others.
I think there are numerous problems with the class in general, yes i love being a rogue, but wouldnt it be so much better if our damage was increased, not only for pvp , buti n end game instances where we CAN be neglected.
I think this is the main problem with rogues at the moment, many dont know how to fight and even then we have to work hard and pull off a perfect combination of moves (i.e no mistakes) vs other opponents.
Starting combat unstealthed we should be considered fairly average targets.possibly slightly easy.
Starting in stealth this should give us a tremendous advantage in the fight, but it really doesnt. Sure we cna restealth, vanish etc. But why do we have to blow reagents etc, surely we should be able to win without them, and win more often & more comfortably with them.
This is not the case as rogues can be eaten for breakfast after one mistake, esp vs hunters. Wheras if you start from stealth on a hunter that fight can often still go either way (not talking about a duel).
Sure figting in a random contested zone, a rogue *might* beat a sucky hunter. But even then, any good hunter (key word: "good") will be able to screw over any rogue. It's not even just scattershot, it's the ability of hunters to chain trap as well.

PvP in bg's is a whole different story. Hunters spam flares and traps and are actively preparing incase they get jumped by a rogue. Only through luck can you beat a hunter this way, and even with that luck you still need all your cooldowns up unless, like I said before, they aren't very good. Such is the sad truth of things.
Yea I dont agree with the above comment. I beat hunters to often for it just to be coincidence. Plus a 120 energy rogue can down a hunter before his kidney shot is over just using a thiste tea.
If your getting chain trapped ... your doing something wrong end of story.
A) You should have detect traps up. B) You can hit a hunter in melee range that is standing only slightly off center of a trap and stay out of its range. Granted this can backfire but on several occasions I have been able to dance around traps in duels with the hunter sending me some very pissed off WTF's after the match.
C) if you dont want him to wander a foot or two off the trap so you can start a stun lock out of trap range blind him.
Alot of people tell me that using cooldowns is cheap and I should be able to win without them. I honestly think these are the people that freeze up while fighting forget to use their cooldowns... and silently curse themselves at the graveyard /telling their friends they are so badass they shouldnt have to use cooldowns.
you are one of those rogues who wins one or two out of five and says "i win in all these matchups". Sure you win once in a while, but against good hunters you get owned 4 outta 5 times. Or so people who play with you say...
I have 4 level 60's at this point.
60 rogue
60 shaman
60 priest
60 warrior
All have at least 1 or 2 pieces of their tier 1 epic set and are ranked at least Legionairre (or alliance equivalent), except the rogue who is my most recent creation. Also under my belt is a 46 hunter, just for kicks.
From my perspective, I can fairly say that 9 out of 10 fights between rogues and hunters come out with the hunter on top. Yes, of course skill matters, yes of course spec matters. But if you have two equally geared, equally skilled players, the hunter will almost always win. Sad, but true.
If you can beat hunters on your server easily, then the fact is, they suck. Consider rerolling to a server where hunters are skilled, because seriously, you'd be in a whole new league with some of the hunters I fight. I'm lucky if I can get get off even 1 hit.
I love hunters in World PvP I pwnd them, that said is because I am prepared and ready they are not. Duels on the other hand is a whole different scenario most times i lose. to win duels i have come to used impr sap greatly if time right my chances for winning a duel increased to 50/50 against a hunter.
